History of the

| James Madison
Stoner was born on Smithfield Street in 1836, and was
admitted to the practice of the law in the City of
Pittsburgh in 1858. During his more than fifty years of
practice, he achieved a measure of prominence. By the
turn of the century, he had been joined in practice by
two of his sons, M. W. Stoner and W. W. Stoner, both well
respected lawyers, under the firm name of J. M. Stoner
& Sons. M. W. Stoner was known primarily for his work
in trusts and estates, while W. W. Stoner was a prominent
trial lawyer and a two term President of the Allegheny
County Bar Association. |

| The
firm continued its practice under this name until 1954,
when the name was changed to reflect the then partners of
the firm. They included Alexander C. Tener, a former
Allegheny County Orphans' Court Judge, James R. Van Kirk,
Lester K. Wolf and Martin L. Moore, Jr., all now deceased. By then the emphasis of the
firm's practice had begun to shift away from trial
practice to estates and trusts, taxation, business, and
real estate. |
